Making progress. Making change! Until recently I have dedicated my time to my family and to my career as a medical doctor. It is now my “new normal” to learn and apply new skills, design and create, capture and re-imagine. I make things. There is excitement and anticipation in the planning and process, reward in the completion.

In 2017 I retired from my job in the neonatal service of South West Scotland. It had been a very enjoyable and rewarding career. My children were all adult and independent. I was compelled to follow a different direction which involved tapping in to some sketchy but longstanding creative ideas. I wanted to look at the world in a different way so embarked on college education studying Art and Design and then Photography.

What has always inspired me is outside - it’s the big stuff; the mountains, the sea, the rocks, the rivers and glaciers. It’s the energy in the wind and the water. It’s the colour and flow of the seasons.

In my creative work I am searching for ways to capture the emotion and spirit that these things stir in me. I confound myself however, as I recognise in my process a drive to achieve control and balance rather than the spontaneity and unrestraint I feel I ought to strive for. I have found that it is ceramics which enables me to work with my required discipline, while allowing the behaviour of the clay and its finish to give the work an energy which is often unexpected and fulfilling.

So ceramics is my primary medium but quite definitely not the only one. I get as much pleasure from working with textiles, print and paint. Photography has taken me by surprise and, as with all things creative, I have much to learn.
